Unravelling the Menace of FraudGPT

It's no secret that advancements in technology, while spectacularly beneficial, can also open up a Pandora's box of unanticipated threats. Recently, the cybersecurity landscape has been rattled by an emergent AI tool, 'FraudGPT'. This malicious tool follows the trail blazed by WormGPT, and it has already started making waves in the dark web and various Telegram channels. But what exactly is FraudGPT, and how significant is this threat? Let's dive in.

 

FraudGPT: A Closer Look

As per a report published by Netenrich security researcher Rakesh Krishnan, FraudGPT is an AI bot deliberately tailored for offensive maneuvers such as crafting spear phishing emails, creating cracking tools, and carding. The tool, which started making rounds since July 22, 2023, is offered at a subscription rate of $200 per month, $1,000 for six months, and $1,700 for a year.


An entity who goes by the alias 'CanadianKingpin' promotes the tool as a Chat GPT alternative with a myriad of exclusive features. The tool allegedly possesses capabilities to write malicious code, generate undetectable malware, detect leaks and vulnerabilities, among others. The creator claims that the tool has over 3,000 confirmed sales and reviews.


Why FraudGPT Matters

The appearance of FraudGPT signifies the rise of a new kind of cybersecurity threat. As AI tools similar to ChatGPT become prevalent, cybercriminals are adapting and creating adversarial variants explicitly engineered to promote cybercrime without restrictions. Such tools could act as a springboard for rookie threat actors to carry out convincing phishing and business email compromise (BEC) attacks at scale, potentially leading to the theft of sensitive information and unauthorized wire payments.


While organizations can create tools like ChatGPT with ethical safeguards, the challenge lies in the fact that these technologies can be redeveloped without those safeguards. As Krishnan points out, it's critical to implement a robust defense-in-depth strategy and utilize available security telemetry for fast analytics to detect these rapid threats before they can inflict damage.


In a cybersecurity operations center (CSOC) environment, such advanced AI tools could pose significant challenges. The CSOC teams would need to remain vigilant and proactive in updating their threat intelligence and improving their incident response procedures. This will involve continuously training their machine learning models to detect the signatures of such AI-enabled attacks and engaging in constant system audits to identify vulnerabilities before they can be exploited.
